Airbnb host was robbed of $ 40,000 in jewelry and vibrators
One Airbnb host faced the greatest fear from users. A guest stole over $ 40,000 in property, and the thief let his dog poop all over the host’s apartment as if to add insult to injury (or poop on a carpet).
Amy Cheapho has lived in her LA apartment near Runyan Canyon for four years, and last summer she started listing her apartment on Airbnb.
So far, she has hosted 60 Airbnb guests at her home and for the most part, she has nothing but good things to say about the experience. In our telephone interview together, she said,
It’s a great supplement, you know, extra income.
However, before last week’s nightmare scenario, Amy only had one bad experience with a guest. She added,
I’ve had a problem before, but realized that every time I had a problem it was when it came to instant booking.
No, “instant book” is not a revolutionary library service of the future (which I totally mark), it is a feature of the site that does not “require host approval before” the listing can. be reserved, according to Airbnb.
Well, last Sunday night Amy got an instant booking from a girl named “Britney” who told Amy her parents were going to stay and that she “loved the place, it’s perfect”.
It’s Britney, bitch:
Amy added that in hindsight, Britney’s actions were a bit suspect. Amy said,
One question she asked was how she would get in… And I said, “Oh, I’ll call you, I’ll open the door, and the keys will be there.” “
At around 9 p.m. Amy called her on her phone while she was at a friend’s house (SCIENCE!), And while Britney took over an hour to respond to Amy’s text asking if everything was okay, Britney finally replied:
Wonderful, beautiful, great place, thank you.
All of the above adjectives seem straight out of Trump’s lexicon, right?
Of course, that’s when Britney became a downright suspicious AF.
A few days later, Britney extended her stay for two days, but her credit card was subsequently refused. However, Britney made the excuse that the required funds were currently being transferred (an alibi I used in my early twenties).
That Friday, Amy’s housekeeper walked into the apartment and found it to be an absolute disaster area. According to Amy, her housekeeper was completely shocked and kept Amy up to date, saying things like:
Oh wow, there’s poo on the carpet. Oh wow, there’s poo in the kitchen. Oh wow, they broke into your closet.
Here is the SMS exchange between Amy and her cleaning lady.
I never thought I would say that, but be prepared for some dog shit!
Aside from dog shit all over her apartment, Amy had to contend with the fact that she had been robbed of over $ 40,000. When asked what exactly was stolen, Amy replied:
All. I mean they stole everything from my extra computer which has all my writing and all my backup stuff to my grandma’s rosaries to my vibrators to the quarters I leave for my housekeeper to all my bags to main … Like $ 40,000 worth of stuff.
Yes, you read that right. They stole her vibrators AND her grandmother’s rosaries (which were with her in the coffin). WHY WOULD SOMEONE STEAL A USED VIBRATOR? WHY WOULD SOMEBODY STEAL ROSARY BEADS?
Because 2016 is why.
Items that were also taken away include a box with all of Amy’s important documents (including her tax returns), car keys and passport.
Someone even tried to open credit cards on behalf of Amy online, which she said was done “probably from my apartment or my computer.” IS THIS NIGHTMARE EVER OVER ?! I HAVE SEEN GREEK TRAGEDIES THAT ARE LESS A STORM OF SHIT (LITERAL) THAN THIS.
Now Amy worries that since her car keys were taken someone is stealing her new 2016 Volkswagen Jetta.
While Amy informed Airbnb of the theft on Friday, the company offered to send an expert within 24 to 48 hours and on Wednesday morning, that expert had not arrived to assess his request.
What makes matters even more problematic is that the requested receipts for his missing items were in the box that was stolen. Amy said of her disappointment with Airbnb’s response,
There is no checklist: “This is what you have to do. “
And when she informed the authorities and filed a police report, the cops said it happened “all the time.”
However, Amy “still wants to believe people are good” and says that despite everything that has happened, she still plans to continue her Airbnb business. I just hope they find Britney or whoever that thief is and bring her to justice.
